Projection Screens
What are my choices?
There are several choices of projection screen which are specific to your application, and come in various formats;
- Manual pull down, or electric wall or ceiling mounteds screens
- Recessed screens
- Fixed frame screens
- Portable screens such as fastfolds
- Rear projected screens - often used in commercial applications where space or aesthetics.
- is an issue. Mirror rigs are often used here to reduce throw distances.
- Curved Cinema screens in Cinemascope
- Acoustically transparent perforated screens used in cinemas which allow speakers to be mounted behind
- Specialist silver screens are used for stereoscopic images ( IMAX 3D )
- High gain screens such as DNP Supanova are used in bright daylight conditions
What screen is best for me?
Standard Video 4:3 - used for basic video images and some PC data images
Standard widescreen 16:9 - used for widescreen HDTV, anamorphic DVD and some PC data images
Cinemascope 2.35:1 - Many Hollywood blockbusters are produced in formats such as Cinemascope where the movie is 2.35 times wider than it is high. When watching this aspect ratio on a 16:9 screen, 33% of thepixels are used to create annoying black bars, therefore reducing your image resolution.
What is an anamorphic lens?
It is possible to achieve a true rendition of a Cinemascope image at home, by using an anamorphic lens in front of the projector, which stretches the image back to it's native format, just as the Director intended! The downside to this is that you create 'pin cushion' effect when using an anamorphic lens, so that is why the screen is curved to compensate. It has the added bonus however of increasing brightness !
What is the optimum viewing distance?
This can vary depending on the type of screen surfaces used, but as a rule of thumb the optimum viewpoint is three times the height of the screen image.
