What are the choices and where are they used?
Control systems come in two basic forms:
Handheld wireless controllers allowing freedom and flexibility to the user, and can be simple controllers or can even be capable of browsing the contents of your media library anywhere.
Wired controllers ranging from simple buttons on a wall to built in touch screens, controlling security, audio systems and i-pods, as well as whole house systems.
What can a control system do?
In simple terms, pretty much whatever you wish as long as the device that wants to be controlled can be integrated via a choice of mediums. These range from simple ON/OFF controls, to complex Infrared or computer based interfaces.
Controlled environments include;
- Commercial Audio-visual systems including projectors, video conferencing systems etc.
- Home cinema set ups.
- Home Automation such as lighting, heating, blinds and garage doors.
Applications
Applications are either commercial or in the home, and are designed to perform simple repetative tasks such as controlling the home cinema system by removing all the remotes and placing one simple controller at the heart of the system.
Example:ITV used an RTi controller in the Southbank Television Centre Preview Theatre, which simplified the users control of the systems available, and ensured consistency of operation was acheived. Devices controlled included the projector source switching, lights, DVD playback controls, as well as broadcast video systems, 7.1 surround sound systems and bar audio control.
What's best for me?
